After taking a short quiz today, we introduced topographic maps by looking at a topographic map of our area here in Scottsdale, including some of the McDowell Mountains. We also saw a topographic map of a part of the Mogollon Rim.
Assignments:
We worked on how to find the real world distance between two locations by using the scale of a map that shows the two locations and the distance between the two locations on the map. We found the distance between central Phoenix and Wickenburg.
We also saw three different kinds of maps, the Mercator projection, the conic projection, and the equal area projection. Each kind of map has its strengths and its weaknesses. You should be aware of the main strengths and weaknesses of each of these three kinds. There is more information about these projections on the Chapter 2 web page. Assignments:
We introduced two basic kinds of map projections, Mercator and equal area. Map projections are methods to make flat maps from our spherical globe. Each projection has its strengths and its weaknesses. These strengths and weaknesses are important for us to learn. The Earth Science Chapter 2 page has more information about these projections.
Assignments:
After describing what latitude and longitude mean, we began to find the latitude and longitude of cities around the world, and to plot them on a blank map. We'll have more to do with these ideas as we go through the year, too.
Assignment:
Topography is our next matter of interest. We identified several landforms in the world, namely, plains, plateaus, and mountains. We also focused on Arizona's topography, including the Colorado plateau and the Basin and Range Province in which we live.
Assignments:
We completed our lab work today and planned our lab report.
Assignments:
Today we began an experiment to find the amount of water that flows through soil in 30 secondsw depends on the kind of soil. It's not easy to do, but with care our students will do well. Tomorrow we will finish the experiment, discuss what we have found, and describe how to write our reports. The report will be due on Monday.
Assignments:
We heard a presentation today from the Office of the Arizona Attorney General's Community Outreach and Education Department about ways to think about and respond to bullying. Tomorrow we will proceed with out lab experiment. Come prepared!
In the mean time, our Tropical Disturbance is getting better organized. If--IF--we are lucky, we may get some rain as a result of this system in a few days. Will we get any rain from this tropical system?? We will follow this Disturbance to find out! Today we celebrated our knowledge with a test on Chapter 1.
Tomorrow we have an 8th grade assembly during 6th period. Assignment:
Students presented brief summaries of the major ideas we have studied so far in preparation for Monday's test. They were
