We finished our discussion of motions of water in the oceans and reviewed some of the important points.
Students also selected their top three choices for the Ocean Research Paper. Students will receive their assigned bodies of water on Friday.
Assignment:
El Niño and La Niña
Assignments:
Today we dealt with ocean currents. We studied their causes and why they curve as they flow through the oceans (Coriolis Effect). Upwelling is an important result of ocean currents, too.
Assignment:
We described the water in our oceans today in terms of salinity, density, temperature, and pressure. Ocean water also contains dissolved oxygen and carbon dioxide, important for oceanic animal and plant life.
Assignments:
We saw winds, currents, ocean currents, and waves on Earth at https://earth.nullschool.net. Waves can be described by their wavelengths, amplitudes, wave heights, and frequencies, and we will do so as we learn more about them.
For Thursday's quiz you will need to know where we get our water from in Scottsdale, and also know relatively how much we get from each source, that is, where do we get most of our water from, the second most, and the least? See your Scottsdale Water Report for the information. Do we get more water from CAP or from SRP? From what reservoir does the CAP take its water? From what reservoir does the SRP take its water? You will also need to know the biggest users of water in Arizona and what activities in your home use the most water. Assignments
We took our quiz on nuclear energy today. I hope all went well. I "beta" it did! Get it?
After our quiz we reviewed the use of water in the USA, Arizona, and in our homes, identifying the most significant uses in each context. Know those for Thursday's quiz! Assignment:
We looked up different seas in our world atlases in order to select a few for our ocean research paper. Your job will be to find a sea for which you can locate three different types of sources to cite. For example, you may use reliable web sources, books, and periodicals (newspapers and magazines). A periodical may be read on the web so long as it is also available in print. The rough draft and final paper will be turned in early in the 4th quarter. We will set the dates soon.
Assignments:
We checked out Scottsdale's most recent water report today.
Assignments:
Water resources for Scottsdale are currently in good shape, at least for the time being. We get most of our water from Lake Havasu, thanks to the Central Arizona Project. We get some of our water from Roosevelt Reservoir courtesty of the Salt River Project. Some of our water is recycled water, and a bit is ground water, a resource that we would love to preserve.
Students still remember the water cycle from past years, and that's good. We want to revisit it with a bit more sophistication than before. Be sure to be able to describe it in detail. Assignments
After taking a look at the similarities among coal, gas, nuclear, and hydroelectric power plants we shifted to a new focus for our class over the next few weeks, namely, water. Fresh water is our first consideration; it should quench your thirst for knowledge, don't you think.
